Brian Hassett aims to expand the reach of Chicago's largest charity. As he takes over next month as president of United Way in Chicago, Mr. Hassett acknowledges that the organization's core funding source-payroll deductions from employees at large Chicago-area companies-has limited growth potential.
Fund raising at United Way has been relatively flat in recent years, and officials are unsure if 2000's $96.2 million will be matched this year. Mr. Hassett hopes to rekindle growth by drawing smaller employers and wealthy individuals into the United Way orbit.
