State joins pursuit of Andersen; With pension funds out $40 mil., top lawyer sues.(News)(Jim Ryan launches investigation)

Byline: PAUL MERRION Joining a throng of state and federal investigators, Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan has launched a formal probe of Andersen's involvement in the downfall of Enron Corp. Mr. Ryan is pursuing Andersen on two fronts: an investigation and possible legal action under state law, while vying for a leading role among several states involved in federal class-action litigation.

Using a ``civil investigative demand,'' the equivalent of a subpoena under the Illinois False Claims Act, the attorney general is seeking a ``fairly broad'' range of Enron-related documents, a top aide said last week.
