Abbott Laboratories, which for years has hovered near the bottom of the pharmaceutical industry's top-10 international rankings, is now banking on a handful of biotech breakthroughs to leapfrog into the uppermost echelon. A cutting-edge rheumatoid arthritis drug that promises to be a blockbuster, billion-dollar product for the North Chicago-based drugmaker is only the first of what Abbott and its partners hope will be a wave of high-margin, biotech-derived treatments.
Two especially promising ones are in the pipeline now, following on the heels of D2E7, Abbott's as-yet-unnamed rheumatoid arthritis drug that's expected to hit the market next year. A monoclonal antibody designated J695 is being tested for the treatment of multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease...
