TDS' growth strategy defies industry woes.(Telephone & Data Systems Inc.)(Brief Article)

While telecommunications rivals stagger under the weight of industrywide overcapacity, Chicago-based Telephone & Data Systems Inc. continues its methodical expansion. Last September, the company made the biggest deal of a three-decade acquisition campaign in smaller markets, paying $195 million for Chorus Communications Group Ltd.
in Madison, Wis. The deal added 45,000 phone customers and 30,000 Internet customers to a broad local telecom network that Telephone & Data Systems (TDS) controls in small southern Wisconsin towns. New Hampshire has emerged as another expansion market for TDS, which has 4.3 million customers in 34 states. In two recent deals, the company added 27,000 customers in New Hampshire.
