Boeing labor talks in limbo.(Briefs)(Brief Article)

Crain's Chicago Business, September, 2002

Boeing Co. wouldn't agree to a federal mediator's 11th-hour request that it resume stalled talks with its machinists union next week. The mediator had urged both sides to extend the machinists' current contract for 30 days beyond its Sept. 1 expiration and return to the bargaining table this week.

The move came after the International Assn. of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) urged its 26,000 members to reject Chicago-based Boeing's most recent offer and set a weekend strike deadline. IAM officials agreed to extend the strike deadline until this week and signaled their willingness to continue negotiations.
