Byline: Joe Cappo I almost saw Martha Stewart a couple of weeks ago. She and I both attended the American Magazine Conference in Phoenix, which was a far cry from last year's meeting. This event is usually held in a resort setting, but the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks prompted the American Magazine Publishers to eliminate the frills and move last year's meeting to New York.
Perhaps because magazine advertising is still being squeezed, the program this year was more business-oriented than usual, even though it was in a resort location. At previous meetings, speakers have included such notables as Hillary Clinton, Margaret Thatcher, Oliver Stone and Norman Schwarzkopf.
