Byline: KEVIN DAVIS The major airlines are discounting business fares with the steepest reductions seen in a decade as they struggle to reverse the stubborn slump in ticket sales and defections to discount rivals. Fares on popular flights out of Chicago have been cut 40% or more in recent weeks, and carriers are easing restrictions such as the notorious mandatory Saturday night stayover.
But it's far from clear whether business travelers want to be courted just now, as many have curtailed trips because of the weak economy, switched to discount carriers or just become more efficient about planning ahead.
