Byline: JAMES B. ARNDORFER As Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. looks to diversify, it will soon confront an expanded rival aiming to take a bite of its core chewing gum business. Cadbury Schweppes plc, the London-based beverage and confectionery giant, is boosting its position in the market with the acquisition of Pfizer Inc.'s gum business, which includes such brands as Trident.

Cadbury, which will have 26% of the world's chewing gum market compared with Wrigley's industry-leading 31%, is expected to give its new brands a stronger push than they got from New York-based Pfizer, a pharmaceutical company. ``Cadbury is going to be a much more aggressive competitor,'' said David Kathman, an analyst at Chicago-based research firm Morningstar Inc.
