McKenna Jr. is positioned to get a grip on a lot of their wallets. In the early jockeying since former Gov. Jim Edgar last month declined entreaties to run, Mr.

McKenna has caught the attention of political operatives by recruiting more than 50 fund-raisers for his team, including many of the party's heaviest hitters. "It's as impressive a finance committee as anyone's seen since Jim Edgar began his run for governor in 1990,'' says Illinois Manufacturers' Assn.
