KLEIN Local scientists left jobless in a succession of technology and pharmaceutical industry mergers, spinoffs and acquisitions have turned into entrepreneurs to stay in Chicago and ply their trades. The Chicago Technology Park and Research Center, the city's startup incubator, has seen a surge in new ventures from alumni of companies including Pfizer Inc., Pharmacia Corp., Monsanto Co.

and Motorola Inc. who are using their severance pay and experience to launch new companies. For many scientists, the ventures are long-held dreams they'd nursed while toiling in laboratories and offices.
