The format Crain's Chicago Business uses to forecast earnings of Chicago-area companies is produced in conjunction with Thomson First Call , a unit of Canada-based Thomson Corp. Using its database of analysts' estimates, Thomson First Call segments expectations for the coming quarter by industry groups and size of companies.
The results consist of a compilation of analysts' per-share earnings estimates that were available as of Oct. 30. Separately, Thomson First Call provides actual per-share earnings for the earlier quarter for companies that have reported by Oct. 30. Results are weighted based on the market capitalization of each company, and companies are listed in each industry segment in descending order of market capitalization....
