More retail chains heading this way; Drawn by vacant sites, competitive considerations.(News)

Byline: H. LEE MURPHY At least a half-dozen major merchants are lined up and waiting to enter the Chicago market. The chains-including office supply giant Staples Inc. and Dick's Sporting Goods Inc.-have hired real estate brokers and are talking with landlords, sources say. Some have already signed leases, while others are in the early stages of the scouting process.
If all of the interested retailers pull the trigger, the next few years could see a wave of retail expansion surpassing anything seen here since the mid-1990s, when Target Corp. and Home Depot Inc. flooded the market with stores. That surge was triggered, in part, by the recovery from the 1990-91 recession. Similarly, the current binge is prompted by the turnaround from the sour 2001-02...
