ComEd moving toward link-up with power grid in the East.(News)

Byline: STEVE DANIELS Commonwealth Edison Co. is moving forward with plans to join an East Coast power transmission consortium. If federal regulators approve, the Chicago utility in May will join PJM Interconnection LLC, which operates the transmission grid in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware.

The PJM board, despite opposition from some of its members, asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Dec. 31 to let ComEd join the group. The move would satisfy the commission's requirement that utilities link their networks in regional grid systems to improve reliability and make it easier for competing power generators to ship power to customers in other parts of the country.
