Like new? Close enough: Used gear can do the job.(Technology)

Byline: MARK HENRICKS More than 220 million personal computers will be replaced in 2004 and 2005 as the gear purchased to cope with Y2K gets old, according to Connecticut-based technology market research firm Gartner Inc. In fact, Gartner says, more PCs will be replaced this year and next year than were purchased in go-go tech buying run-up to Y2K.

That tsunami of used technology hitting the market means good buys are available in the so-called "computer aftermarket.'' Prices for used equipment can run 30% to 70% below new, according to Tom Kunkel, managing partner of R3 Systems Group Inc., a Carol Stream technology asset recovery firm.
