She helped create programs at the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians (she was its first female president) and the American Academy of Family Physicians (where she was the first woman elected speaker) to mentor students considering family medicine as a career option.
Dr. Lopez herself didn't need much of a nudge. "I knew I wanted to be a doctor when I was 10 years old," she says.
