Byline: SANDRA SWANSON 1904 was the start of something big for accountants in Illinois. For the first time on record, the state had a female CPA. Fast-forward 100 years: In February, Kathy Hopinkah Hannan became the first woman at Chicago audit and tax services firm KPMG LLP to be named managing partner in charge of tax services for the Midwest.

Four months later, Deborah DeHaas was the first woman named Midwest managing partner at crosstown rival Deloitte & Touche LLP. The accounting industry has made progress promoting women, but like big law firms, there's room for improvement.
