But the last few years have ushered in a dramatic turnaround for the industry. Already, nuclear plants produce 20% of the nation's electricity, second only to coal, with 50%.

Now, heightened concerns about global warming and environmental devastation are renewing interest in an energy source that doesn't produce air pollution and treads lightly on other parts of the ecosystem.
