But the last few years have ushered in a dramatic turnaround for the industry. Already, nuclear plants produce 20% of the nation's electricity, second only to coal, with 50%.
Now, heightened concerns about global warming and environmental devastation are renewing interest in an energy source that doesn't produce air pollution and treads lightly on other parts of the ecosystem. Improved efficiency, meanwhile, has led to lower operating costs. Add to that the recent jump in crude oil and natural gas prices, and nuclear energy looks pretty good.
