Byline: Sascha de Gersdorff Legend has it that one of the largest, most lucrative business partnerships was sealed with a handshake. In 1965, McDonald's boss Ray Kroc and potato potentate J. R. Simplot shook on a simple but risky deal: Mr. Simplot would build a frozen french fry factory-a novelty at the time-solely to supply McDonald's.
Before joining forces, McDonald's received frozen fries from more than 100 suppliers, and Boise, Idaho-based J. R. Simplot Co. had myriad smaller customers nationwide. It's difficult to say which party benefited most from that historic handshake. McDonald's Corp. has sold a lot of french fries over the years.
