USF seeks traction in truck biz; Missing opportunities even as demand rises.(Markets)

Byline: BOB TITA Trucking company USF Corp. is trying to shift into higher gear before the industry's recovery passes it by. An upswing in manufacturing in 2004 increased demand for truck hauling like no time since the late 1990s. But Chicago-based USF's profits suffered from a costly weeding out of underperforming operations.
In 2003, USF earned $42.2 million, or $1.55 a share, on revenue of $2.29 billion. Through the first three quarters of 2004, net income fell 28% to $17.1 million, or 62 cents a share, from the same period in 2003. Revenue rose 3.7% to $1.81 billion. The erosion stems primarily from USF's abrupt shutdown of its East Coast trucking subsidiary, USF Red Star Inc., in May 2004 after unionized workers walked off the job in a dispute....
