Instinet entices local exchanges; Broker would be good fit for Archipelago, Merc.(Markets)

Byline: KATE RYAN Electronic stock broker Instinet Group Inc. is for sale by parent Reuters Group plc, and two Chicago exchanges are among the potential bidders. Winning Instinet would be a nice diversification move for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, but for Archipelago Holdings Inc. it could be crucial to survival.
While both firms are known to be interested in acquisitions, neither would confirm a bid is in play. Nasdaq Stock Market Inc. has put in a bid for Instinet, according to Crain's New York Business. If Nasdaq wins, Archipelago could watch its rival's marketshare double overnight.
