Byline: Bob Tita As train master at Burlington Northern Santa Fe's (BNSF) freight yard, Dave McCalley has one overarching goal: Whatever comes in, get it out-as soon as possible. With four 8,000-foot-long trains a day rolling in to the yard and four equally long trains leaving, any delay can quickly cause a major traffic jam.
"The challenge is to keep traffic moving and just make sure everything flows in and flows out,'' says Mr. McCalley. Most of the rail cars that pass through Logistics Park Chicago are double-stacked with steel containers measuring 8 or 9 feet tall by 20 feet or 40 feet long.
