ITW deal seals two plastic bag units; Zip-Pak division keeps rolling into Europe with purchase of U.K. firm.(Illinois Tool Works Inc)(Supreme Plastics)

Byline: JOSEPH PRYWELLER Crain News Service Illinois Tool Works Inc.'s Zip-Pak division, maker of plastic zippers for resealable food packages, bought the reclosables division of U.K.-based Supreme Plastics Ltd., continuing its expansion into Europe. Financial terms weren't disclosed. The deal joins two mid-sized plastic zipper manufacturers competing in the crowded but fast-growing field for closures that allow consumers to reseal food pouches to keep food fresher longer.
The sale, which includes plants in England and Spain, also gives Manteno-based Zip-Pak access to new technology, says Robert Hogan, Zip-Pak director of international sales and marketing. Supreme Plastics specializes in plastic zippers with narrow flanges of up to a half-inch, Mr. Hogan...
