Byline: STEVE DANIELS Hurricane Katrina's 200-mile path of destruction sliced through the Gulf Coast operations of Chicago-area companies ranging from McDonald's Corp. to Tribune Co. to USG Corp. Retailers like Hoffman Estates-based Sears Holdings Corp. closed stores in the New Orleans area.
Supply disruptions caused by the chaos at the Port of New Orleans hindered companies like Decatur-based agricultural products giant Archer Daniels Midland Co. that depend on Mississippi River transport. Eventually, countless other local businesses will feel the storm's ripple effects in the form of higher costs for fuel, shipping and a range of commodities.
