Byline: SANDRA JONES Von Maur Inc., the stealth department store chain from Iowa that has operated virtually unnoticed in the Chicago area for more than a decade, is preparing to step into the limelight. A throwback to the way department stores did business more than a century ago, Von Maur shuns advertising, avoids big sales and closes its stores on traditional retail blowout days such as the Fourth of July so employees can be with their families.

That's not exactly a formula for grabbing shoppers' attention. But James von Maur, fourth-generation scion of the company's German founder, C. J. von Maur, hopes to gain a wider audience in Chicago by moving into the region's higher-profile malls, taking advantage of consolidation sweeping the retail...
