Alfred C. Stepan Jr., who distributed calcium chloride to control road dust on country roads in Illinois, founded the company in 1932, working from a rented desk at the North Pier Terminal in Chicago. The company's first plant, near Joliet, was started in 1954, and in 1959, the company made its first acquisition, buying Maywood Chemical Works in Maywood, N.J.
