The son of Swiss Mennonites, he grew up in Kansas. The company molded a unique plastic made from coal tar pitch that was used in everything from clock cases to flower pots. Son John Krehbiel Sr. joined the company in the 1940s and added metal stamping and electrical connectors to the product line for clients such as General Electric Co.
