Applications jump at Illinois nursing schools; Capacity shortage; good applicants turned away.(News)

Byline: SARAH A. KLEIN Illinois faces a serious nursing shortage, but it's not for lack of would-be nurses. Applications at local nursing schools have increased dramatically since 2002, more than doubling at the University of Illinois and rising as much as 50% at more expensive private institutions.

Despite the surge of interest, many qualified applicants are being turned away because local schools say they don't have the faculty or clinic space to accommodate them. The Niehoff School of Nursing at Loyola University Chicago, which received 1,000 applications for 125 slots in its fall full-time program, turned away more than 300 eligible applicants.
