OfficeMax pushed on paper; Groups want end to buys from endangered forests.(management)

Byline: SANDRA JONES OfficeMax Inc. is focusing on cutting costs as part of its turnaround effort. But environmental groups are urging the office products retailer to pursue conservation of another kind. Dogwood Alliance and ForestEthics, non-profit organizations focused on protecting endangered forests, are pressuring the Itasca-based company to stop buying paper from such areas and to sell more recycled paper.
The campaign, which began last fall, gained steam in April at OfficeMax's annual meeting, where about a dozen protesters rallied outside the Wyndham Northwest Chicago hotel in Itasca and representatives inside the meeting outlined their complaints to board members.
