GUM BATTLE; Wrigley's troubles double as Cadbury comes on strong in firm's core business.(acquisitions)

Wrigley Jr. Co. in the gum business, compounding the candymaker's difficulties as it struggles to jump-start newly acquired mint and candy brands. Cadbury Schweppes PLC, which bought the Adams gum business from Pfizer Inc. in 2003, is coming on strong in the U.S.

market, which Wrigley has dominated for most of the past century. Popular new Cadbury offerings such as liquid-filled Trident Splash, Trident Fusion and Dentyne Soft Chew have lifted its gum sales 14% in the past year-strong numbers in a market that grows about 6% annually.
