I needed a job to pay for school while I was studying economics at Loyola University and I heard about a group of solo practitioners who needed a gofer. When I started working there, they said, "Dan, we're going to teach you law the old-fashioned way. Here's 10 bucks, go buy us lunch.'' Then one would give me a brief and say, "Read this and tell me what you think.'' Then it was computer research.
My first year as a lawyer, I got a referral on a partnership dispute case from Mike Hayes, a former Illinois deputy attorney general. I went to high school with his sons.
