Byline: Michelle Evans Standing in an aisle at a Walgreens, Steven Lauer had a decision to make. Pay full price for Scope's liter of mouthwash or save a buck with the store's own version, Fresh Breath. "I knew if I liked it I would never buy the Scope again,'' says Mr. Lauer, who ended up switching to the store brand.
That was 15 years ago. Now he's CEO of Topco Associates LLC, which buys private-label consumer products in bulk on behalf of the 63 supermarkets and wholesalers that are members of its cooperative. Skokie-based Topco leverages the buying power of its member-owners-second only to Wal-Mart Stores Inc.-to negotiate cheaper prices from vendors for products ranging from canned peas to diapers.
