With less than two weeks remaining in this spring's legislative session, chances are slim that Illinois' leaders will make meaningful progress toward solving long-term problems the state faces in education, health care and transportation. There's still time, however, to prevent a short-term transit crisis in Chicago.
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) needs $100 million to avoid service cuts and fare hikes that would devastate a system already struggling to maintain its viability. Many in Springfield are reluctant to rescue the CTA from an operating budget crunch brought on at least in part by the agency's inefficient ways.
