Trash contracts overhauled as bidding brings savings up to 40% Some of New York City's biggest companies are breaking with the notorious garbage cartel and putting their lucrative trash contracts out for competitive bids. Industry experts say this is the strongest indication yet that real competition is finally coming to the city's carting industry, which authorities say has long been controlled by organized crime.
Competition means lower prices for most, if not all, of New York's 250,000 businesses. Observers estimate that costs have dropped between 30% and 40% for large office buildings and up to 25% for smaller businesses, such as delis and restaurants.
