In an industry of giants, Forest Laboratories Inc. has always managed to please investors with steady growth, selling pharmaceuticals that the big boys dismissed as too measly. Until this year, that is. While trying to break into the big leagues, the Manhattan-based company was clobbered by declining sales of its top two products.

Ferocious competition in its generics business also added to the red ink. The company lost $25 million in fiscal 1997, ended March 31, as revenues fell 37%, to $280.7 million from $461.8 million in 1996, an all-time high.
