REIT gains critical mass with deal for two towers: SL Green registers for public offering with portfolio financed by Wall Street. (real estate investment trust SL Green Realty Corp)

Some real estate investors go public with their existing holdings. Others go on an acquisition binge in anticipation of forming a real estate investment trust. Steve Green is of the latter variety. In anticipation of his public offering, for which S L Green Realty Corp. filed a registration statement last week, the local real estate investor signed contracts to buy two more Class B office buildings in midtown.

The buildings are 1140 Sixth Ave., a 22-story office tower at 44th Street that had been owned by Norman Sturner; and 1372 Broadway, a 20-story tower at 38th Street, part of the troubled Winthrop Financial portfolio of properties that passed to Apollo Real Estate's control.
