Tech banker up for sale; major institutions eyeing Cowen & Co.

Major institutions eyeing Cowen & Co. Cowen & Co., one of New York's last remaining midsize investment banks, has put itself up for sale. Cowen has hired merger-and-acquisition powerhouse Lazard Freres & Co. to pursue the sale of the firm, sources say. Cowen is asking for at least $300 million and has had recent discussions with five major financial institutions, including Paris-based Societe Generale and Boston-based BankBoston Corp.

"Cowen would make sense for any number of U.S. bank holding companies that are looking to create an equity platform," says a senior executive with one potential suitor. The two Lazard bankers representing Cowen, Kendrick Wilson and Gary Shedlin, would not comment. Mr. Wilson is in charge of Lazard's M&A department. Cowen...
