A year ago, one of Jamey Bennett's old college buddies called him up with an idea. With consumers already using the Internet to buy everything from books to stocks, why not create a Web site that allowed them to borrow money on-line as well? "I thought it was a great concept," says the 30-year-old Mr.
Bennett, who at the time was a vice president at Reed Elsevier Business Information and also one of new media's rising stars. Two months ago, Mr. Bennett resigned from Reed Elsevier to become director of marketing and business development for LendingTree Inc., the new company he put together with his friend Douglas Lebda.
