In theory, quality matters. And the more expensive the purchase, the more likely we are to care about its quality. When it comes to corporate health care coverage, though, that doesn't seem to be the case. Asked in a recent KPMG Peat Marwick survey about the quality of the health care delivered by their own managed care plans, most employers confessed ignorance.

In fact, according to the survey, only 15% of employers requested publicly available health maintenance organization report cards from the nonprofit National Committee for Quality Assurance, the organization set up in 1990 by a coalition of large employers -- ranging from General Motors to Xerox -- and health plans.
