The federal government last week joined the debate over the rights of part-time employees when it sued Time Warner Inc. for wrongly denying benefits to employees "improperly" classified as temporary workers. The lawsuit, the first of its kind for the U.S. Department of Labor, sends a signal to business that the department is taking a more aggressive approach in confronting the use of temporary workers as a way to reduce corporate spending on health and retirement benefits.
Attorneys and employee benefits experts say the lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, will likely prompt companies that regularly employ temporary workers to review their internal policies and make sure they are not running afoul of the law. "I really think that there is no reason...
