AQUARIUM MAY BE FISHING FOR SITE Will Manhattan be the site of the country's next major aquarium project? Frustrated with the lack of tourist attendance at its Coney Island location, the New York Aquarium is said to be considering opening up another facility in the heart of Gotham.
Fewer than 1% of the 760,000 annual visitors to the Brooklyn site are tourists. For aquariums in cities like Chicago and Baltimore, tourists account for about half of all visitors. The Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the aquarium as well as the city's zoos and research facilities around the world, denies that it is considering another site.
