The Money changers; Mag cashes in on redesign for savvier readers, keeping edge in personal finance.(Money magazine)

A year ago, Money magazine was losing its currency. The personal finance publication was struggling with falling ad pages and the aftereffects of a major staff overhaul. Competition from other magazines and the Internet was getting stronger day by bull-market day. To combat its problems, the market leader introduced a redesign, which provided a more sophisticated look but risked alienating the magazine's loyal followers.

The impact has been swift and significant. Through September of this year, ad pages were up nearly 10%, while those of its nearest competitors were flat or falling. During the same period, advertising revenues grew 16% to $108 million, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. Circulation, which had been sliding, has stabilized....
