Power Alley surge protectors;New media mustn't cost city its diversity.

Thanks for the excellent report on Silicon Alley ("Power Alley," Nov. 29). The final "warning" section was a good reminder of potential problems that accompany this important new segment of our city's economy. I am also very concerned about the downside of these companies' impact on the real estate market.

Is anything being done by the city or any business groups to help "older" businesses -- like the fur, mattress and printing companies that are being priced out of their Manhattan space -- to relocate elsewhere in New York City? In addition to needing the diversity that these businesses provide for the economy, we also need the types of jobs they offer in order to provide employment for less skilled workers (or people with non-high-tech skills). marvin...
