David Ebershoff has what most writers only dream about: a big-time New York literary agent, a novel coming out in February, and a hefty $350,000 advance tucked safely in the bank. But the Pasadena, Calif.-born Mr. Ebershoff is not about to let it change his life. Instead, he is sticking with his day job.

In fact, just after he won his contract with Viking in mid-1998, his employer, Random House, promoted him to publishing director of its Modern Library imprint.
