When Alex Lee first laid eyes on a 4-year-old housewares company with four employees, he was sure of one thing. "I knew I would never work there," he recalls. That was five years ago. Back then, Mr. Lee, who had already achieved a modicum of fame as the designer of a teakettle for architect Michael Graves that became a yuppie icon, was about to graduate from Harvard Business School and was looking for a job.

Today, OXO International, the fledgling firm that Mr. Lee once rejected, has 22 employees, annual sales nearing the $80 million mark and a reputation as one of the hottest brands in housewares.
