E-publishing plot thickens;Success of electronic title by Stephen King spurs plans for on-line books; are readers ready?

Add Sol Rosenberg to the long list of Stephen King fans. The president of Versaware Inc., an electronic-publishing technology concern in Manhattan, has seen a surge in demand for his company's services since the release of the best-selling author's latest novella as an electronic book in March.

About 400,000 copies of the book were downloaded from the Internet in just 24 hours. ``That woke a lot of people up,'' says Mr. Rosenberg, whose company helps publishers digitize their books for distribution via the personal computer and other formats, including handheld devices. ``The interest in e-books has gotten a tremendous shot of adrenaline from what happened with the Stephen King book.''
