Look at it this way: Whatever happens tomorrow, the Great Republic will endure. Not only that, it may even prevail. Unless Con Ed goofs, on Wednesday morning the electricity will go on and the clock radio will wake me. Water will still run through New York faucets and swirl around the toilet bowl.
The mail will be delivered later that day. I will get Stanley Brilliant's mail; he will get mine. On Wednesday after the election, Roger Clemens will still be a jerk. Imus will be raising hell. Liz Smith's column will appear in the Post and Newsday. The Knicks will wonder if they should, after all, have kept Ewing. Ewing, in Seattle, will announce no one loves him. Over in New Jersey, Jon Corzine, unable to break bad habits, will still be buying votes. Madonna...
