If Silicon Alley had to choose a theme song for 2000, it might be Gimme Shelter. Faced with a severe Nasdaq downturn and diminishing prospects, the city's new media upstarts are increasingly trading their independence for the comforting embrace and deep pockets of large corporate owners. That was reflected most dramatically in the proposed merger announced last week between About.com Inc.-one of the Alley's most successful Web content companies-and traditional media giant Primedia Inc.
