Confident area shoppers in a festive mood ; Will outspend rest of country during holidays; retailers still wary.(Brief Article)

Despite dot-com layoffs, the tanking Nasdaq and The Gap singing the blues, New Yorkers are expected to outspend the rest of the country this holiday season. Thanksgiving weekend sales were strong. And in its first-ever holiday mood survey of tristate shoppers, Deloitte & Touche found that area consumers are willing to spend more freely because they feel more confident about their job security and the economic outlook than other Americans do.
Local revelers surveyed said they would spend an average of $1,246 each, well above the national average of $836. ``For retailers doing business in the tristate area, it's going to be a good year, because there is still a lot of confidence,'' says Dan Miele, partner in Deloitte's Tri-State Consumer Business practice....
