Marc miller has turned bathrooms into gold mines. As a student at the University of Michigan, he came up with the idea of putting ads in public rest rooms. His business professor didn't think much of the notion, though he still got a B in the course. But after his 1997 graduation, the Long Island native hit the streets of New York City and found that bars and nightclubs were interested.

Then he persuaded R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. to buy ads, and a business was born. Three years later, InSite Advertising has 12,000 billboards in rest rooms in cities and university towns across the United States. The firm first turned a profit in 1999, and Mr. Miller expects sales to exceed $7 million this year. His clients range from Amstel Lite to Tampax, Sony Music to...
