In 1968, when captain kangaroo was interrupted early one morning for a news bulletin about the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, Jonathan Wald didn't hesitate. He ran and broke the news to his mom. It was the birth of his lifelong passion for television news. He was 3 at the time, old enough to draw inspiration from his father, Richard C.
Wald, then president of NBC News. "I never really gave any thought to doing anything else," says the younger Mr. Wald. At 17, he set off in pursuit of his goal, landing a spot as a desk assistant at NBC News in the summer before he enrolled at Columbia. It was a job he returned to throughout his college years.
